Human beings are social beings. A simpler way to put it: people need to live with other people,  were are not usually made to develop our life in solitude.

And this is due to several reasons. One of them, the most important is that our intelligence and our ability to communicate need the company of other beings like us to develop and to use with advantage. If we want to use the advantage we have over other living beings it is necessary to do it within a group.

But just as we need to live in group, it is also true that living in a group has its drawbacks. From the friction that coexistence always involves to the struggles for power that almost always occur when a number of people, large or small, live in society. Although we need it, we must also admit that life in group is not always a bed of roses.

We must therefore try to make live in group the coexistence among people in the group, or even between different groups. And to do so, the best option is to establish some rules which would allow us to live in a peaceful manner, minimizing conflicts and solving them peacefully and in a way beneficial for the majority.

We are not the first, in no way, talking about this issue. Before us many great philosophers and thinkers spoke of societies and the rules governing them. Rules that can respond to different interests (of the powerful, of the people, of religion, etc.) and they may be more or less fair, but which always give a guide to all the members of the group about what can and what cannot be done.

The most important rules are the laws, which govern the organization of society and the relationship between individuals and institutions. But there are also lower-level rules but these are not less important: they are the rules of coexistence, civic norms, which were earlier called rules of civility: how to behave with others; and what you want for yourself is the same that what you must want for others, the result is a greater harmony and well-being for all.

The rules of civility are also standards/rules of education. If we are going to cross a zebra crossing and a car goes past without stopping, we think the driver is violating the Highway Code, but we also think he/she is rude and has no manners, who is flouting the law , a rule which gives us the right to safely cross the road; and by behaving that way he/she is denying us this right. If we speak in class without the teacher's indications, we are showing our poor manners to our teacher, and to our colleagues our contempt for their right to learn. If someone parks under or parents "Keep Clear" sign not letting them get the car out of the garage, he/she is breaking the law and also scorning us as people by denying us our right to get the car out of the garage. And on the other hand, if we give way to an old man at a door, if we let a pregnant woman our seat in the bus, if we ask and respond politely and if we say thanks  when someone tells us something we didn't know or helps us, if we help a neighbour to carry the bags,... if we do all that, we are carrying out the norms of coexistence.

And if we comply with the code of conduct in all aspects of life, a little or much, everyone will be happier. Because, as our teachers tell us, I am a man, I consider nothing that is human alien to me.
